Container Grown Wallflower Culture

Plant type: Biennial
Sowing: 15 – 20ēC. Cover with an average layer of medium vermiculite.
Germination in 1 – 2 weeks
Temperatures above 20ēC will depress germination.
Sow June – August for March - April flowering

Sowing to transplanting 3 – 4 weeks

 

Growing on:
Temperature Maintain a temperature of 16 – 18ēC for 1 week after transplanting to allow roots to establish. Packs can then be grown on in cold frame, tunnel or outdoor standing out area.
pH 6.0 – 7.0
Feeding Incorporation of long term slow release fertiliser in the pack can be useful.
Growth regulation Bloomsy Baby is a genetically dwarf variety with a naturally bushy habit and chemical growth regulation should not be necessary. If growth regulation is needed for other varieties, plants respond to Chlormequat (Cycocel) 3.0cc/l at the 4 – 5 true leaf stage and again about 14 days later.
Pack/Pot size 6 pack / 9 - 10cm pot.
Planting out Ideal for container use but can also be used for bedding out planting at 15 – 20cm spacing
Advice Ensure good ventilation throughout the winter months. Do not allow the plants to become waterlogged
