Basil
(Ocimum)
Basil requires a minimum temp of 12-15 deg C and grown as annuals, all are worthy of growing as ornamentals.
Basil seed is best sown spring at a temperature between 13-20 deg C. Direct sow May onwards (UK). Basil leaves are used fresh, stored dried or frozen. Ideal companion plant for Tomatoes is thought to be a deterrent for pests and diseases. Please note many of the varieties grown from seed may produce variations in leaf form and habit from the parent, and may not be 100% true.

Grow basil in pots on the windowsill, patio, in the herb garden, scented garden or flower borders.

Needs warmth and shelter, grows well under glass/polytunnels. Basil Bush is a small leaved variety, much used in Italian cooking. The flavour increases when cooked. Soothing to the stomach.

The cultural information should be used as a guide only, I have found a number of different sowing techniques for the same seed from different sources there does not seem to be a standard. With this in mind you should use this website as a guide only, you probably already have a tried and tested way of sowing different seeds. As a rule of thumb the larger the seed size the more cover it requires, and fine seed like Lobelia Begonia etc requires no cover.
