I just have to say that I am so impressed
with Nemaslug.
On Wednesday night, and again on Thursday morning, my back and front lawns
looked like the injun's were massing for attack at The Little Bighorn !
Slugs everywhere, there were armies of the infernal things. Then my
order of Nemaslug arrived ..... on Friday evening it drizzled, ideal for waging
war. My neighbors must have thought, "The old fool has gone gagga" as
I watered the lawns with my 2 gallon watering can. But on Saturday
morning, as the sun broke over The Little Bighorn, there was not an injun in
sight.

Nemaslug protection for Potatoes
To give potatoes maximum protection apply Nemaslug when the plants first start
to show. A second drench can be applied when you see the flowers setting on the
plants. This is when the tubers are starting to form and are at their most
vulnerable. One application of Nemaslug will protect potatoes for at least 6
weeks.
Safe for children, pets and wildlife, Nemaslug is so easy to apply. Just dampen the soil and then drench the nematodes into the ground using a watering can or through a garden feeder (see over for instructions). Make sure that you apply the solution to the soil and take care to apply it to the sides of paths and anywhere else that slugs might hide.
Nemaslug is a unique natural product, containing microscopic worms (nematodes) which seek out slugs, stop them feeding on your plants within 3 days and then kill them. Nemaslug controls all common species of small to medium sized slugs (up to aprox 8cm - 2.5-3 inches). Use all year round under glass/indoors, outdoors early spring (Late February early March dependant on area & temperature) up to late November. At the time of application soil temperatures should be a minimum of 50C (400F) Nemaslug stays active in the soil for up to 6 weeks from time of application.
Nemaslug effectively
controls slugs with no risks to children, pets and wildlife. It provides long
lasting protection right through the susceptible growing period of young plants
(up to six weeks), it is also unaffected by wet weather.

Nemaslug contains concentrated doses of nematodes, which are specific natural
enemies of slugs. These microscopic creatures do occur naturally in the soil,
but the increase in slug numbers during the Spring and Autumn leaves them
outnumbered. Therefore, each pack of Nemaslug contains millions of
reinforcements. These reinforcements both kill and deter slugs, giving young
plants the protection they need to develop and grow.
Once applied by
watering can, the nematodes move through the soil, seeking slugs. They penetrate
the pest and stop it feeding.
This occurs after a few days, thus quickly protecting your plants, and the slug
dies several days later, underground. The nematodes then reproduce inside the
dead slug, releasing a new generation of hungry nematodes that quickly disperse
to find more pests.
Start your control regime early and you will be
able to target the young slugs growing under the ground feeding on humus.
Nemaslug uses the nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita, which was
discovered by scientists at the government research institute at Bristol,
England.
One application of Nemaslug provides 300,000 nematodes for every square metre of
soil, giving at least six weeks control of slugs. This is generally enough time
for seedlings and bedding plants to get well established.
Nemaslug is easy to apply and does not leave any unsightly residues.
The majority of the slugs will die underground, so don't expect to see dead
slugs lying around.
Applying Nemaslug
Since Nematodes (Nemaslug &
Nemasys products) are living organisms, you should order product as required and
must be used in one go it cannot be stored once it is made up. When you receive
your pack, place it in the refrigerator immediately and use within the use by
date (which can be up to four weeks)
Apply to moist soil. The soil temperature should be 5ºC (40ºF) or over (this is
when plants start to grow). Nematodes are capable of surviving the odd frost; so
don't worry if the temperature falls temporarily after you have applied
Nemaslug.
Unlike some controls, Nemaslug continues to work well during wet weather -
exactly when you need protection against slugs!
Nemaslug might affect water snails. To avoid harming them keep the treatment 15
cm (6") away from ponds.
If you have a heavy clay area, ensure you apply Nemaslug to well worked soil.
Nemaslug is less effective on cloggy clay soil, which has not been worked and/or
has become waterlogged.
Nemaslug comes in pack sizes to treat 40 sq.m (50 sq.yds) and 100 sq.m (125
sq.yds).
A regular regime of using Nemaslug every six weeks
is the best way to keep slugs at bay throughout the growing season.

Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer
Nemasys H effectively controls vine weevils with no risks to children, pets and wildlife. It controls vine weevil larvae in the soil – where these pests are most destructive. Unlike chemical alternatives, Nemasys H is effective against all larval stages.
Apply anywhere, indoors or outside, onto soil or compost that contains the larvae.
Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer is the simple solution to
control vine weevil.
This already successful product has now been substantially improved. Over many
years we have been working with HRI, the leading UK based horticulture research
group, to bring forward this exciting development.
Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer contains a newly found nematode, Steinernema kraussei.
This new nematode has some very impressive benefits including;
• Consistently greater effectiveness over and above the previous
nematode (Heterorhabditis megidis)
• Ability to work at cold temperatures. This new nematode will work at
temperatures down to 5ºC (40ºF) (Heterorhabditis required a minimum of 12ºC
(54ºF)), so that you can protect your plants earlier in the year.
• Most gardeners notice that they have a problem with vine weevil in
February/March (this is when they notice their plants are sick), previously they
had to wait until April/May to apply Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer, now they can
use the product straight away from March onwards.
• Prevention is better than cure, so it is better to apply the product in
autumn, before the problem develops. Again the new Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer
nematode will provide much improved performance here. In particular, gardeners
can apply it well into November, providing a much longer application window.
To keep a minor problem at bay, one autumn treatment
(September - November) should be adequate.
For a serious infestation, treat in the spring and again in the autumn
Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer will kill larvae present in the area and protect
against further larvae damage for up to four weeks.
Apply when the soil temperature is at a minimum of 5ºC (40ºF) and the vine
weevil larvae are present. Outdoors, this is usually from March to November.
Indoors, vine weevil can be controlled year round.
Apply directly to the soil around the roots.
Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer is available in pack sizes of 160 pot or 12 sq.m/14
sq.yds or 100 sq.m/125 sq.yds

Nemasys Leather Jacket Killer
Leatherjackets are the larval stage of the crane fly or
daddy-long-legs. Leather jacket larvae are about 2.5cm (1" long), greyish black
in colour, legless and with no distinct head.
In summer leatherjackets pupate. In August they start to lay eggs re-infesting
lawns. Within two weeks eggs hatch. The young start to feed, continuing
throughout winter, ready to gorge on grass roots in spring. Grass growth slows
and yellow patches appear. Grass is easily pulled up, with little or no root
growth.
In August gardeners may see clouds of daddy-long-legs emerging from lawns in the
early morning and this, as well as the listed damage, are sure signs of
leatherjacket infestation.
Starlings peck at the grass in an attempt to eat the grubs.
Wildlife, such as foxes and badgers, can also create a lot of damage as they dig
up your lawn in search of grubs for food.
There is no chemical control for leatherjackets.
Use Nemasys Leather Jacket Killer to deal with a
leatherjacket infestation.
Apply when the young leatherjackets are active in the
soil, this is typically late August through to the end of October.
When you start to see the adult daddy-long-legs in your garden (towards the end
of August) you will know that in a few days they will be laying eggs. These will
hatch quickly, therefore, aim to apply about a week to two weeks after you see
the adults.
Apply to moist lawns when the soil temperature is above 12ºC (54ºF) and water
them in well. The nematode needs to be washed well in so that they reach the
roots where the leatherjackets will be. Make sure the lawn does not dry out
after applying nematodes.
Immediately after applying the nematodes, water the grass well so the nematodes
are washed into the soil to reach the roots where the leatherjackets will be.
Make sure the lawn does not dry out after applying nematodes. Keep the lawn well
watered for at least two weeks.
The nematodes (Steinernema feltiae), seek out the leatherjackets and attack the
pest by entering natural body openings. Once inside, they release bacteria that
stops the pest from feeding, quickly killing the pest. They do not stop there.
The nematodes reproduce inside the dead pest and release a new generation of
hungry infective nematodes, which disperse and search for further prey.
Each pack of Nemasys Leather Jacket Killer will treat 100 sq. m/125 sq yds.

Nemasys Chafer Grub Killer
Apply to moist lawns during August and early
September. This is when the young grub larvae are active and the temperature is
above 12ºC (54ºF). Despatched when
available direct from the Laboratory during late July to early August.
Immediately after applying the nematodes, water the grass well so the nematodes
are washed into the soil to reach the roots where the chafer grubs will be. Make
sure the lawn does not dry out after applying nematodes. Keep the lawn well
watered for at least two weeks.
Do not apply later than September, since the grubs start to move down deeper in
the soil and become inactive until the following spring.
The nematodes (Heterorhabditis megidis) seek out the chafer grubs and attack the
pest by entering natural body openings. Once inside, they release bacteria that
stops the pest from feeding, quickly killing the pest. They do not stop there.
The nematodes reproduce inside the dead pest and release a new generation of
hungry infective nematodes, which disperse and search for further prey.
There are two pack sizes. One treats 20m2 whilst the larger pack will treat 100
m2 / 120 sq.yds.

Cabbage White Caterpillar and Codling Moths in fruit trees can be controlled by nematodes. Commercial growers have been successfully using the nematode Steinernema carpocapse for some years on the two pests and now it is available to everyone.
The nematodes are applied directly to the cabbages and other brassicas as a wash. Three applications are used as soon as you see the pest to kill caterpillars that will hatch over a period of time. Says allotment holder, Sue Hinton, "I was amazed with the results when I used it. After the first application most of the caterpillars disappeared but you need to use a further two applications five days or a week after each other to ensure all hatchings are killed. The solution needs to be applied to all leaf surfaces and you need to make sure that you spray the pest. Pests not directly sprayed will not be controlled so do make sure that you hit them."
Cabbage White Caterpillars are also responsible for eating ornamentals, especially nasturtiums.
For Codling Moths the nematodes are used to control the over wintering pupae on trees and ground from September. The nematodes are applied with a pump sprayer during the evenings or on dull days.

Nematodes must be used in one go because they may not be
evenly distributed in the pack.
Nematodes are easy to apply simply as a drench. All you need is a bucket, a
stirrer, a watering can with a coarse rose and water. A standard pack takes
approximately 20 minutes to apply
Once mixed with water, apply immediately, making sure they are applied to the
soil. Wash any nematodes off the leaves using more water.
It is important to water the lawn thoroughly immediately
after applying Nemasys Chafer Grub Killer and Nemasys Leather Jacket Killer.
This is to ensure the nematodes reach the soil where the target pest is located.
Make sure the lawn does not dry out after applying nematodes./b>
Tips
Apply the nematode solution to moist soil. It is best to do this during your
evening watering as the soil won't dry out so quickly, giving the nematodes time
to reach the sub-soil.
When applying nematodes to grass or flowerbeds, water well afterwards so that
the nematodes are washed into the soil.
If you have to apply nematodes during the day (especially if hot) again make
sure you water them in well so the soil doesn't dry out before they have reached
the sub-soil.
Plan to control slugs from early in the season when they are young and before
they start to do the damage.
See the advice on when it is best to apply each product to target the pest you
want to get rid of. Remember that there can be an 8-week difference in the
seasons between the north and south of the UK.
Most garden chemicals (including fertilizers) can be used with nematodes.
However, it is best to apply them at different times.
The cultural information should be
used as a guide only, I have found a number of different sowing techniques for
the same seed from different sources there does not seem to be a standard.
