Baby Salad Leaf Mixtures

Packets of mixed seeds suitable for young leaf production for stir fry or salads, cut and come again crop. Can be sown all year round in milder climates or raised in glasshouses or polytunnels in cooler areas for winter early spring crops. Sow every two weeks for a continual supply of tender young leaf.
Sow outdoors sprinkle seeds 1/2" apart in a 2-4" wide row covering lightly or broadcast sow at approx 10gram per square metre. Indoors broadcast in beds or flats.
Harvest after approx 3 weeks by clipping with scissors, most plants in the mix will regrow
Seed count is between 450 and 750 seeds/gram
Direct seeding rate approx 30g per 180' x 3" wide

Aromatic Greens. Cut greens when about 4-8" tall for a flavourful addition to salads, vegetables, pickles, and sushi. Plant more thickly than other greens. Small orange and yellow chrysanthemum flowers appear later on un harvested plants. This is the preferred "fine" or "small" leaf strain.

Recommended for thick sowing and harvest of deliciously sweet, tender-crispy, baby leaves that add a whole new dimension to salad mixes. Bright, light green leaves are curly and ruffled.
Re grows for multiple cuttings. Excellent for baby leaf year-round with winter protection. At full size, tender ruffled leaves on narrow white petioles can be bunched like Vitamin Green.

Tolerant to both heat and cold. Sow early spring to mid summer.

Lactuca sativa angustana
Chinese Lettuce is grown mainly for the leaves and stem, the leaves can be used raw or cooked, having a slightly sweet flavour and more coarse than lettuce. Young leaves can be used in mixed salads. Stems used raw or cooked are crisp and juicy like lettuce, celery, artichoke or chard, best peeled before used, harvest stems prior to the plant flowering. prefers summer shade and well drained humus rich soils. A good companion plant for carrots, onions and strawberries. Sow seed March to June in situ thin to 30cm apart, best picked frequently. Sow when temperatures are below 20C

 Poterium sanguisorba
Young cucumber flavoured leaves used in salads, sauces, fish, fruit salads, herb butter and soft cheeses. Chopped leaves are added to soups and sauces prior to serving. Evergreen. Salad Burnet makes a good container plant.

English Sage is a good companion plant for cabbage and carrot.

The cultural information should be used as a guide only, I have found a number of different sowing techniques for the same seed from different sources there does not seem to be a standard. With this in mind you should use this website as a guide only, you probably already have a tried and tested way of sowing different seeds. As a rule of thumb the larger the seed size the more cover it requires, and fine seed like Lobelia Begonia etc requires no cover.
